Low-Temperature Pharmaceutical Shipping Container
Temperature-controlled shipping of pharmaceutical precursor chemicals worldwide, shipments valued at over $400,000 USD each.
The chemicals degrade completely if they rise above −40°C, yet a single trip could last 100 hours, including long waits on hot airport tarmacs. Each stainless steel vessel weighed roughly 600 lbs, and with that much value on the line, failure wasn't an option. The customer's first idea, Styrofoam and thermoelectric chillers, would have needed a forklift-sized battery to last the trip, and risked the narrow vessel tipping.
Impact built a three-section container using closed-cell, cross-linked foam machined to fit the vessel exactly, cooled by eight aluminum bayonet chillers packed with dry ice. Machined HDPE base plates and foam inserts held the vessel steady, ventilation channels let the CO₂ escape, and a built-in thermocouple with a digital gauge allowed remote temperature monitoring.
